There are a large number of conservation organisations doing excellent work in South Africa. Many are run by volunteers who give their time willingly to making a difference to their chosen environments. The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) recognised a communication and networking gap within the conservation world, and decided to take action.
On the 12th May 2009, SANBI hosted a networking and funding forum called the CONSERVATION MARKETPLACE. It was held in the Old Mutual Auditorium at Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town. The Toad NUTS was one of 92 organisations who exhibited their work at the marketplace on that day.
The morning was filled with conversations between a wide range of 'green' people. Urban Biodiversity people spoke to green corridor people. Leopard conservators chatted to leopard toad 'NUTS'. Many new relationships were started, and many old friendships were renewed. There was a definite sense that we should all be working together more, and that the isolation we all feel in the various projects that we do, is unnecessary.
In the afternoon, the funding organisations visited the stands and chatted to many of the stall holders. Contacts were made which may lead to greater corporate involvement in conservation work. We are really looking forward to the next annual Conservation Marketplace - an excellent initiative!
